As the holidays (once again) quickly descend upon us, I wanted to take a moment to list 10 ways to use social media to give back this holiday season. I’m not talking about promoting your products and services during this last quarter. Rather, I am talking about taking just a little bit of time and using your products and services to give back to the community. My wish for you is that you close out the year stronger than ever. But in doing so, there are simple ways to say “thank you” to the community that has loyally supported your brand. And there are simple ways to support your hometown community in tangible ways, too!
1. Hold a Facebook Contest
2. Offer a Free Workshop or Webinar (yes, I said free!)
Why not? It’s the holidays! Offer free training as a gesture of good will to your loyal fan base and local prospects. Promote your workshop or webinar through your various social media platforms.
3. Hold a Workshop and Donate Proceeds to a Local Charity
Make sure when you promote your workshop that you clearly state all registration fees will be donated to charity. Consult with your CPA if you have any questions or concerns. Promote the workshop through your social media platforms.
4. Give Away a Free Service
Yes, there’s that four-letter word again. I did say “F-R-E-E”! C’mon, where’s that holiday spirit??
5. Hold Twitter-Follower Only Specials and Offers
Tweet out your specials and offers to your Twitter followers. This campaign is really a great marketing strategy year-round, but put a holiday spin on it and sweeten the deal even more.
6. Use Twitter to Donate Money to a Charity for Every Retweet
Set a donation amount and tweet that you will donate that amount to a specific charity for each retweet. Follow up at the end of your campaign and tweet the final contribution amount. This a simple call to action that will cost a Twitter follower just a few seconds of their time.
This brings to mind Drew Carey’s 2009 Twitter campaign with LiveStrong. Drew announced he would donate a cool $1 million if he reached 1 million followers by that year-end. Otherwise, he would prorate the donation: if 500,000 followers, he would donate $500,000 to LiveStrong. Follow that lead and be generous, too, with whatever your budget allows.
7. Create a Pinterest Customer Board
Highlight your customers and events of the past year making sure to thank them for being a valuable part of your community.
8. Create Inspirational Pinterest Pins
Create thought-provoking pins that inspire and de-stress. A reflective quote paired with a simple graphic is an effective way to help people take a moment just to be.
9. Hold a Pinterest Pin It to Win It Contest
Ask your customers to follow your brand on Pinterest. Give them the contest dates and make sure they understand the rules of the contest such as:
- How do they enter
- What they need to do
- What is the prize
- How a winner is chosen: Is it number of likes or repins? Or a random drawing of all entries?
- When and where the winner will be announced
Make sure you read Pinterest’s brand guidelines for running a contest.
10. Hold a Food and Clothing Drive
Choose a physical location for dropping off items, whether it’s your office or elsewhere. Use your various social media platforms to announce the start and end dates of the food drive. Tell people what you are accepting: clothing, non-perishable food items, gas cards, etc.
These are just a few suggestions for using social media to help you give back this holiday season or any time of the year.
I’d love to hear other ways you are using social media and giving back! Please post your ideas in the comments below.
Much joy to you and yours!
